Construction of an oven with natural materials in the field of New Guinea – Spring 2012

The Saligari group in collaboration with New Guinea held a workshop on the construction of a traditional wood oven with natural materials. The workshop lasted four days and was spread over two weekends and was accompanied by a team of volunteers as part of the open field work in New Guinea. Initially, the base of the oven and peripheral surfaces were made of stone, while the substrate and the floor of the dome were prepared and built. Then the inner dome was constructed, the oven was baked and the coatings were applied. Finally, a pergola was used to protect the structure from the weather. The Saligar Group has published a small manual on how we can make a traditional wood-fired oven ourselves.
